So what exactly VPS Hosting is & How Does it Work?
How do does VPS hosting work and what primary benefits does it provide? On a technical level, VPS hosting works similarly to and has many features/capabilities to that of a dedicated server. It is also less expensive than a dedicated server. Each VPS hosting account is hosted on web server that is partitioned into its own virtual server. While there may be multiple VPS clients hosted on the same server and sharing the same server resources, each client only has access to their virtual server.

Having your own virtual server has several benefits compared to a standard shared hosting account. The most notable one is performance. VPS hosting should have less clients using the server and is allotted more server resources. Of course, this depends on the hosting company and how many clients they configure to a single server. But in general, most VPS accounts have fewer clients and fewer clients on a server greatly enhances your website’s performance. Furthermore, because each client has exclusive access to their own virtual server, they can install the operating system of their choice and shutdown/reboot their virtual server without affecting any of the other client’s virtual servers. Lastly, VPS hosting offer greater levels of security as all the clients are isolated from each other and use their own virtual server.

When to Upgrade to a VPS Hosting Plan?
Most webmasters switch to a VPS when their website starts to consume too much of a shared server’s resources and begins loading sluggishly. When this happens, it’s actually a good sign that your website is growing, so don’t dismay. It’s simply time for an upgrade. Most web hosts only allow a certain amount of resources to their customers. When a website with too much traffic begins to flood the shared server, the web host may throttle the customer’s account, limiting the number of visitors that can view the site. Some web hosts may even notify their customers, explaining to them that it’s time to upgrade. Upgrading to a VPS hosting plan will give your website the performance it needs to get back on track and grow even larger.

Managed Vs. Unmanaged
When shopping around for a new VPS hosting account, you may notice some web hosts offer managed and unmanaged VPS services. Managed is the most popular choice, in which you’ll most likely need. A managed account means your web host installs and configures all the required/recommended software you may need on your server. They also keep your software up-to-date, configure security settings, and maintain the server & software in a good working order. With unmanaged, only the physical server hardware is maintained. It’s the customer’s responsibility to install and maintain their own software on the server. Managed is recommended for beginners who want worry free hosting, while unmanaged offers complete customization and is great for tech savvy webmasters. We strongly recommend managed if you’re not that familiar with web hosting and how to install/maintain your own server software.
